Guilin, China : Guilin, located in the southwest of China, in the Guangxi Province, is reknowned for its exquisite steep hills, rising abruptly from the ground. The actual scenic views are along the Li River, just outside Guilin.

We visited Guilin from Dec. 24-27, 2004. Usually around that time of the year it is dry and the temperature is around 15-20C. However, when we arrive there we were greeted with a record setting cold front, with rain and tempurature around 0 degree! The visibility was extremely low. My friend Dai Xinrong and I stood in freezing rain on the upper deck of our cruise boat, hoping to snap some good photos. In the end, very few decent photos came out. Those I presented here are among the few that by my standard are from barely acceptable to acceptable. While they may not do justice to the magnificent scenary Guilin has to offer, it does give you a glimpse of what it is like.

Since the visibility was very poor throughout the trip, the comtrast of all my photos were very low. A lot of Photoshop post-processing had to be performed, and with it there are noticable degradations in those photos. Virtually all outdoor photos were shot with the Canon 17-40mm f4 EF-L lense. The photos in caves were shot mostly with the Canon 50mm f1.8 EF lens and a monopod.
