Vienna 2003 : In Feburary 2003 I was invited to a conference in Vienna. My wife went there with me. We enjoyed every aspect of our visit: The culture, the friendly people, the coffee, the concerts, the architecture. I did not have a lot of time doing sightseeing because of the conference. Even more unfortunately, those few days I squeezed out some time to visit the city the weather was not coorporating.

All photos shown were taken with my old Canon Powershot G1. The LCD display of the G1, which can be rotated, served the function of a tripod nicely. Using this technique I was able to make long exposures, something I needed to do inside cathedrals or at night.

Tibet 2001 : In the summer of 2001 I travelled to Tibet with a delegation of Chinese mathematicians. Our objective was to survey the state of mathematical education in Tibet, and discuss with Tibetan mathematicians on ways to improve it.

It was not an easy trip. When the plane arrived in Lhasa, which is over ten thousand feet in altitude, I was gasping for oxigyen. We were warned before hand not to catch a cold. It could lead to pulmonary edema, a dangerous illness in which one could drown in his own fluids. The next day after my arrival I developed high fever and had to be hospitalized. Fortunately it was not a cold. Instead it was food poisoning. I recovered within a couple of days.

While there we spent sometime visiting various places in Tibet. I was particularly interested in getting to know ordinary Tibetans.

I had an emotional experience. It was impossible not to be moved by the decency, the sense of humor, and the tremendous hospitalities of Tibetans. In the mean time, it was also impossible to ignore the poverty, the poor living conditions and worst of all, a unique native culture that has been ravaged nearly beyond recognition today.

I hope these photos will give you a glimpse of Tibet. All photos here were all taken with Canon Powershot G1.
